Day 2

Good morning Kaikoura!

I slept MUCH better last night, went to bed at 9 and rose at 7 this morning!

Unfortunately, the seas were rather rough today, so we had to call off the kayaking trip. I wasn't so bummed out about it though, because I knew that we would come back towards the end of the trip to do it.

As a backup to the kayaking trip, we decided to go on a whale watching tour on a bigger boat. But when we got to the visitors centre to book it, it was still closed. We decided to go see the seals and feed the seagulls at the Kaikoura peninsula!

They were SOO hungry!

The big guys

Seals!

They are getting their breakfast

After feeding the seagulls and seeing the seals, it was time to head to the whale watching centre. When we got there, we were told that we might not get a spot on the boat. Luckly, after some waiting, mom was able to get us on the next sailing!

Ready to go!

When we got out to sea, it was VERY rough! The waves were quite high today, and we were told there was a "moderate to high risk" that there would be sea sickness. They were definitely not joking about that, because nearly HALF of everyone on board was throwing up toward the end of it! Luckly, me and mom were lucky enough that we did not.

Out at sea

When we left the dock, we headed towards the whales.

First encounter!

Not only did we see the whales, we also saw plenty of dolphins as well!

Mom was enjoying it too, until she got her feet wet.
She had to use my shoes for the rest of the day

Back at the hotel

We were headed back to the dock we started at when people were throwing up. The crew were walking past with barf bags, and I was grossed out!

When we got off the boat, we went back to our hotel to chill and take a break. Mom was taking a nap, but thankfully she wasn't snoring so loudly, so I could just play my game in peace. When mom woke up, we went back to the peninsula to feed the seagulls again! Unfortunately there weren't as many this time around.

We then just decided to go get some fish and chips for dinner. We got some blue cod, which is said to be some of the best fish in New Zealand! And I'm not gonna lie, I REALLY loved that fish! They definitely weren't wrong about that one!

Dinner time!

Stay tuned, because you will not want to miss out on tomorrow!

Tomorrow, we head down to Christchurch, the biggest city on the South Island. There, my sister, Delilah will be joining us for part of the trip! Also, we will be visiting the hot pools in New Brighton! (called He Puna Taimoana).

I am SUPER excited for tomorrow's adventures!

  1. That's a bit sad about the kayaking but with it being a rough day you wouldn't want to do that anyway so I think whale watching was the best thing you could have day today. Glad to hear your loving your trip PS the video didn't want to load for some reason
